Our hive
We can’t be Land of Milk and Honey without the honey! In Spring 2019, we welcomed 30,000 Italians to the farm. Italian honey bees that is! Honey, a key ingredient in both homeopathic remedies and delicious recipes, is the ultimate prize of beekeeping. We can’t wait to offer you pure honey from the heart of Leelanau County. However, with bees dying off in increasing numbers, beekeepers help keep our plates full of all sorts of foods! According to the USDA’S Natural Resources Conservation Service, three-fourths of the world's flowering plants and about 35 percent of the world's food crops are pollinated by bees and dependent on these insects for a successful harvest season! Since their flight and foraging patterns include up to 8,000 acres of land, our hive impacts the whole community and our community is helping to feed our hive. Consider planting these bee-friendly (albeit not all goat friendly) plants to support your local beekeepers:
Rosemary
Wild Geranium
Poppies
Clover
Sunflowers
Beebalm
Oregano
Purple Coneflower
Sedum
Yellow Coneflower
Asters
Zinnias
Marigolds
Milkweed
